A new online MPD screening tool developed by the IADC Underbalanced Operations & Managed Pressure Drilling Committee will be rolled out at IADC World Drilling 2010, 16-17 June in Budapest, announced committee chairman Brian Grayson, Weatherford International. Mr Grayson made his remarks while opening the second day of the 2010 SPE/IADC MPD & UBO Conference on 25 February in Kuala Lumpur.

IADC’s Mike Killalea conducted an exclusive video interview with Mr Grayson, which is available on the Drilling Contractor website and through a link from the 26 February edition of eNews. Videos can also be accessed through DC’s Facebook page and through YouTube.

The candidate selection tool will be made available to the industry online at www.IADC.org. It is designed to explain what MPD is and how it may or may not be useful in various applications.

The planned tool is hardly the first contribution that the UBO & MPD Committee has made. “Our deliverables are actually becoming quite a long list,” Mr Grayson said.

The committee has already contributed to industry standards by creating the document that became API Spec 16 RCD on rotating control devices.

“The origin of rotating control devices came about through the development of Spec 16RCD,” Mr Grayson said.

Committee efforts also resulted in API Spec 7RCD on non-return valves.

Further, the committee’s work resulted in the landmark API RP 92U, recommended practices for underbalanced operations. Now, the energetic group is turning its attention to an analogous document for MPD.

Mr Grayson said that the MPD best practices document will take at least a year to complete.

“We’re here to promote the safe and efficient execution of underbalanced operations and managed pressure drilling worldwide,” Mr Grayson said.

Further, the committee has developed HSE planning guidelines, UBO RIG PASS Orientation and WellCAP accreditation for supervisory-level training. The WellCAP program is currently being updated.

The committee will meet next on 9-10 March in Houston. The meeting will be hosted by Halliburton.
