In recognition of his leadership, service and talent that has enhanced both IADC and the drilling industry as a whole, Mike Garvin has been named 2016 IADC Contractor of the Year. Mr Garvin, who is Senior Vice President of Operations Support at Patterson-UTI Drilling Company, accepted the award at the 2016 IADC Annual General Meeting on 4 November in Scottsdale, Ariz. Mr Garvin has served as IADC Division VP North America Onshore since 2015, and he currently leads the IADC Onshore Advisory Panel.

Further, Mr Garvin has been instrumental in collaborating with regulators on behalf of onshore contractors. “Great strides have been made under his leadership with the Texas Railroad Commission Rule 13,” IADC President Jason McFarland said. “In addition, he has provided exemplary leadership for the North America Onshore Advisory Panel and has made significant contributions to the Executive Committee.”

“I’m accepting the award on behalf of the thousands of wonderful men and women that work for Patterson-UTI,” Mr Garvin said. “The only difference between them and me is I’ve had the opportunities to work with all of the wonderful folks that make up the IADC. The award is designed to recognize things that have been done, but all I can think about is how much more we have left to do.”

In his acceptance speech, Mr Garvin recognized the many achievements of the drilling industry but also emphasized that much remains to be done. In particular, he pointed to technology development, well control, training and competency, and advocacy with governments and regulators as areas where critical work must continue. “We’re starting to see a glimmer of recovery in the industry, and with so much more left to do, as we activate rigs and bring crews back on, we can’t ever forget… Our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our people.”

Prior to joining Patterson-UTI, Mr Garvin worked for Ensco as Senior Operations Manager. He also spent 27 years with GlobalSantaFe and its predecessor and successor companies, Global Marine and Transocean, holding various operations and support leadership positions. Mr Garvin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from California Polytechnic State University. He has accumulated a total of 36 years of experience in the upstream sector of the energy business, exploring and drilling for oil, gas and geothermal energy both on land and offshore.

The IADC Contractor of the Year award was established in 1988 to recognize individual drilling contractors and their outstanding lifetime achievements in technical innovation, safety and economic efficiency within the drilling industry. Sponsored by National Oilwell Varco, the award is the only one in the industry reserved solely for drilling contractors. All recipients are nominated and selected by IADC drilling contractor members.
