Four recent IADC Safety Alerts describe serious errors that led to significant injuries. The four are:

• • Traveling Block Hits Crown Resulting in a Fatal Incident;

Schlumberger buys 45% of NOV

Schlumberger purchased 45% of National Oilwell Varco's wired drill-string telemetry business, the companies announced recently. Under the new joint-venture agreement, NOV will retain operational control of the JV, while Schlumberger will add technology expertise and measurement know how, according to a release.

Baker Hughes cuts ribbon on Phase II of new tech center

Baker Hughes Inc. cut the ribbon on Phase II of its new Center for Technology Innovation, a 209,000-sq ft research and engineering center. The $42-million facility will house some 600 scientists, application engineers and laboratory technicians. Activities at the center in northwest Houston will focus on four broad areas for the future – high temperature and high pressure, deepwater, production optimization, and big-bore drilling, completion and production, according to Chad Deaton, BHI Chairman, President & CEO. Houston Mayor Bill White also attended the ceremony.

Drilling Contractor recognized again at publishing awards

Drilling Contractor was recognized once again by the Business Marketing Association – Houston Chapter at the BMA Lantern Awards dinner on Tuesday, 18 November 2008 in Houston and has two new awards to add to the trophy case.

Awards of Excellence were bestowed upon DC for outstanding achievement in online media and sales literature. DC’s website, www.drillingcontractor.org, won praise in the category of web site(s) with a budget under $24,999, and the 2008 DC Media Kit package won in the distribution sales package/media kit category.

NOV's David Reid named chairman of IADC Advanced Rig Technology Committee

David Reid, vice president, E&P technology & business for National Oilwell Varco, has been named chairman of the IADC Advanced Rig Technology Committee. Mr Reid previously served as the committee’s vice chairman-service companies and succeeds Steve Richards, who had served as interim chairman.

Mr Reid is responsible for developing corporate business interaction with strategic E&P companies. Previously, he was vice president of products for NOV’s Rig Solutions Division and vice president of marketing and business development for Varco.

Behavioural workshop to precede IADC Drilling HSE Middle East 2009

In answer to member requests, IADC has organized its first Behaviour Based Safety Workshop, an interactive event to be held on 20 April, the day before IADC Drilling HSE Middle East 2009 (21-22 April, Abu Dhabi).

To ensure that each workshop participant can optimize participation, the workshop is limited to 35 attendees. (There is no such limitation on the 21-22 April conference, however.)

IADC and its global membership consistently support the ongoing effort for world-class safety performance in the oil and gas industry. The variety of disciplines considered (both technical & behavioural) in the quest for the ideal safety culture has been extensive, and nobody has been more involved in the process than the global drilling community.

1st expandable installation with cement, underreaming completed

Enventure Global Technology has announced the successful completion of the first commercial well using its SET expandable system that eliminated cementing and underreaming operations. This milestone comes on top of the 21-day, $1 million per well savings established by incorporating expandable open-hole liners in a well slimming program, the company said in a release.

The company says that the key for success in the HPHT gas well in Robertson County near Franklin, Texas, was the use of a 6 x 7 5/8-in. SET system and swellable elastomer technology. This system utilized the swellables to provide zonal isolation of the approximately 1,000-ft drilling liner.

2009 IADC officers elected

Claus Hemmingsen, CEO of Maersk Drilling, was elected as IADC’s 2009 chairman at the association’s Annual Meeting, held 6-7 November 2008 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Delivering a speech on the industry’s environmental culture during the meeting, Mr Hemmingsen noted that “a host of environmentally founded activities will take place under our umbrella” in the next year. “I look forward to taking part in a responsible industry approach to achieve drilling with environmental integrity,” he said. Louis Raspino, president and CEO of Pride International, was elected as the new vice chairman. Phil Rider, assistant controller–accounting, reporting and compliance for Transocean, was re-elected secretary-treasurer.

IADC Well Servicing Committee to focus on mast integrity, well control

The IADC Well Servicing Committee will launch an education initiative to improve mast integrity on service rigs through inspections and certifications.

Committee chairman Joe Eustace, president of Pioneer Production Services, will kick off the initiative with an editorial in Drilling Contractor. The editorial will focus on mast inspections.

WellCAP instructor qualifications to change

Members of the IADC Well Control Committee met on 12 November 2008 and voted to accept proposed changes to the WellCAP Instructor Qualifications. After nearly two years of review, discussions and revisions, the changes were approved in a nearly unanimous decision. The new requirements will impact all new instructor applicants, as well as the more than 600 current WellCAP instructors.
