5th edition ballot of API Standard 53 issued; comments due by 21 February


The 5th edition ballot of API Standard 53, "Blowout Prevention Equipment Systems for Drilling Wells," has been issued and can be found here. This proposed edition features new language applicable to onshore BOP equipment. Comments can be submitted via API's website using ballot ID 4329. Anyone can comment on a letter ballot, and all ballot responses are due on or before 21 February 2018...

US rig count reaches 924


There are currently 924 rigs drilling in the US, according to the Baker Hughes weekly rig count. Of those, 906 are drilling on land and 17 offshore, with one rig drilling in inland waters. Of the total rigs, 742 are drilling for oil and 182 for natural gas.

Rowan announces purchase of two modern jackup rigs


Rowan Companies announced that it has concluded the purchase of two LeTourneau Super 116E jackup rigs, the P-59 and P-60, which were both delivered new into service in 2013, in a public auction from a subsidiary of Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) for $38.5 million per unit. As previously reported on 11 May 2017, Rowan was the high bidder in a Petrobras public auction with a bid price of $30 million per rig. While the high bid was not accepted by Petrobras after negotiations, both parties agreed to the revised price. Rowan intends to mobilize these modern jackups to the Middle East from their current location in Brazil in late Q1 2018...
