Revised definitions clarify distinction between MPD, UB

Revised definitions for managed pressure drilling and underbalanced operations clarify the distinction between the two. The IADC Underbalanced Operations and Managed Pressure Drilling Committee modified the definitions the group originally set forth.

The modifications state that, during MPD operations, the continuous influx of formation fluids to the surface is avoided. Further, any such fluids entering the wellbore in MPD will be safely contained. Conversely, in UB operations, the intention is to bring formation fluids to the surface.

The revised definitions will lend clarity to two types of operations sometimes confused by industry decision makers.

IADC UBO/MPD Committee Chairman Gavin Humphreys, Stena Drilling, announced the modifications at at the 2008 SPE/IADC Managed Pressure Drilling and Underbalanced Operations Conference, held 28-29 January in Abu Dhabi.

Chevron’s David Payne calls for elimination of diverters, rethinking of well control practices

ImageIt’s time to rethink many of the industry’s well control practices, urged Chevron’s David Payne at the recent IADC Well Control of the Americas Conference. Traditions must be set aside, he said, in order to make progress on issues such as diverter use, cementing, managed pressure drilling and personnel training.

Quoting American author John Steinbeck, Mr Payne reminded the audience that deeply accepted practices could take surgery to remove. “I submit that it may be time for surgery,” he said.

The following are four issues Mr Payne, Chevron vice president global drilling & completions, challenged the industry to rethink.
