Drilling Ahead: IADC Bookstore – new name, new vision

By Mike Killalea, editor & publisher

The times they are a’changin’ at IADC, as regular readers of DC will have observed. The emerging Well Control Institute, reinvented competency benchmarks known as IADC KSAs and our Workforce Attraction and Development Initiative (WADI) are all designed to ensure our industry’s fitness to operate and build a sustainable future.

The IADC Bookstore has similarly undergone a step-change in vision and deliverables. Formerly called IADC Publications, the revitalized IADC Bookstore is laser focused on enhancing expertise for drillers today and tomorrow, whether on the rig or in the office.

Several key initiatives are afoot. One is development of the 12th edition of the IADC Drilling Manual, the definitive rig-site reference. The Drilling Manual, introduced in 1955 as the “Toolpushers Manual,” was last updated in 1992.

Thanks to the incredible dedication of more than 100 subject matter experts (SMEs) in virtually every aspect of drilling technology, the 26-chapter 12th edition of the IADC Drilling Manual is firmly on track. Along with much-needed updates to existing sections, the 12th edition will also feature new chapters and sections on managed pressure and underbalanced drilling, automation, top drives, directional drilling and more.

We plan to begin publishing e-books by midyear, with the complete work available in early 2015.

Deepwater well control

An additional 70 SMEs are nose to the grindstone to revamp the landmark IADC Deepwater Well Control Guidelines (DWWCG). Under the skillful and clearheaded leadership of Louis Romo, BP segment technical authority – well control, the DWWCG team is rethinking and updating the guidelines’ existing five chapters – well planning, well control procedures, equipment and  training (now training and drills) – and added a timely new chapter on process safety.

Progress on the DWWCG is proceeding apace, with publication anticipated by year-end.

IADC Drilling Series

IADC has long published books, forms and contracts. But the IADC Drilling Series is a real step-change. Written under the auspices of the IADC Technical Publications Committee (TPC), chaired by Dr Leon Robinson, the IADC Drilling Series is envisioned as a comprehensive and practical series of peer-reviewed books on drilling.

They are off to a great start. Cementing expert Ron Sweatman’s Well Cementing Operations covers techniques and developments never published in a single source – overview of basic well-cementing theory, best practices, real-world applications, calculations and problem-solving exercises.

Dr Robinson and co-author Juan Garcia, Worldwide Drilling Manager Emeritus, ExxonMobil, are close to completing the Driller’s Knowledge Book. This work was written to help drillers drill more efficiently and safely, bolstered by specific, previously unpublished solutions to common drilling problems. Uniquely, the Driller’s Knowledge Book will help drillers continually improve efficiency while drilling a well.

What do you get when…

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. What do you get when you put a half-dozen drilling geniuses in a room for a few hours? Why, a great new contribution to industry knowledge through the IADC Bookstore. And that’s no joke.
