Exclusive video: Competency isn’t just training or experience

Drilling Contractor associate editor Katherine Scott speaks with John Tustin, Petrofac operations director of competence solutions, on the definition, process and assessment of competency in an exclusive video interview. Petrofac is assisting IADC in the development of KSA templates for rig personnel in safety-critical positions.

Mr Tustin spoke last week at the 2013 IADC HSE&T Conference & Exhibition in Houston on how to take a strategic approach to competency. “Competency is the knowledge that people have, the skills and how they apply it to the workplace. That is the most important thing. Experience comes into it, it takes its place, but it’s not the be all end all,” he said. Further, competency doesn’t sit on its own, he said. It has to be part of an assessment process and a larger organizational procedure. “Training and learning are a journey to competency, but they don’t define competency alone. Companies need to take ownership of their competency systems and framework.”
