New drilling dynamics tool eliminates need for downhole statistical down sampling

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has introduced the BlackBox High Frequency drilling dynamics tool, which samples dynamics data at 1500 Hz and load data at 100 Hz and records all high-speed data to its 8 GB memory. Because there is no need for downhole statistical down sampling, all data can be analyzed at surface for the entire run. DC spoke with Steve Berkman, NOV Vice President of North America Dynamic Drilling Solutions, at the 2019 OTC about how the new tool functions and why it’s particularly useful in batch drilling operations. Watch the video for more information.

Electromagnetic signals bolster new look-ahead-while-drilling service

A new look-ahead-while-drilling service called IriSphere is combining directional measurements with advanced automated inversion to detect formation features ahead of the bit, by using multifrequency transmitter and multireceiver directional subs. According to Irlan Amir, Vice President of Marketing and Technology, Drilling and Measurements for Schlumberger, the technology uses electromagnetic signals that are sent from the transmitter into the formation and retrieved by receivers to enable the look-ahead sensitivity and resistivity profiles. In this video with DC from the 2019 OTC, Mr Amir also talks about high-potential applications and benefits for the technology, as well as results achieved in a recent deployment offshore Australia. Watch the video to find out more.
