Young professionals program at SPE/IADC Drilling Conference to target future leaders of the industry

By Alistair Macdonald, BG Group

The oil and gas industry is constantly looking to the future. Whether this comes in the form of pushing the limits of pressure and temperature, new and innovative technology or exploring and operating in more extreme and challenging environments, none of this would be possible without the exceptional people driving these achievements. In order to maintain this progression and to optimize the life of the industry, it must persist in the development of future leaders – the young professionals (YPs). One of the main priorities for industry organizations such as IADC and the SPE is to engage and develop YPs and students in preparation for challenging, innovating and leading the industry.

YPs half-day program

The premier drilling event of 2015, the SPE/IADC Annual Drilling Conference in London, will feature an inspiring half-day program dedicated to YPs on 18 March 2015 in London. In the morning, YPs (ages 35 and younger) can experience the full SPE/IADC Drilling Conference plenary and technical sessions. In the afternoon, they can attend engaging presentations, career development sessions and networking events for YPs in the drilling industry. These include:

YP luncheon: a highlight of the day’s activities where YPs will enjoy access to industry experts at each table. BP is sponsoring the luncheon.

e-Poster sessions and competition: The brightest YPs and students will be able to share their innovative findings, insights and solutions to modern-day challenges. Conference organizers are still seeking submissions, which can be related to drilling/completions in the oil and gas community, though a wide range of topics will be considered. The best abstract submissions will be invited to present an e-Poster at the conference. Deadline for abstract submission (maximum 500 words) is 11:59pm GMT on 23 February. Deadline for e-Poster submission is 11:59pm GMT on 9 March.

Chartership presentation: This presentation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers will discuss the various routes to chartership and the benefits of chartered status.

Career “soft skills” presentation: Gary Jones, Head of BP’s Global Wells Organization, will highlight the necessary interpersonal skills to thrive in the industry.

Poster presentation: The poster session winners will be announced.

Professional networking event: The day will conclude with this opportunity to meet and socialize with fellow YPs, as well as other industry professionals associated with the SPE and IADC.
