Machine learning can reduce false alarms on rigs, well control incidents

Modern drilling rigs use electronic systems to alert crews to potentially hazardous or costly events such as kicks, losses or spills, but wide fluctuations in measured values generate many false alarms. This can lead to alarm fatigue in crews and, consequently, well control incidents, Sean Unrau, Product Line Manager at Pason Systems, said at the IADC HSE&T Conference in Houston. Companies can reshape journey management programs for maximum security in high-risk areas

It is important to fully understand the risks and hazards that can endanger personnel traveling in high-risk areas. While most companies have a corporate journey management plan, their programs often lack specific details of a region’s threats, said Stan Ayscue, Country Manager for Strategic Projects at Protection Group International. Speaking at the IADC HSE&T Conference in Houston, Mr Ayscue urged the industry to change its approach to journey management and to consider region-specific factors such as the geopolitical climate; major dates such as holidays; and medical issues, such as a disease outbreak. Application of modern technologies can reduce DROPS incidents

Procedures and programs for DROPS safety have helped reduce incidents over the years, but paper-based procedures can only go so far, Gareth Burrows, Global Business Development Director for OES Asset Integrity Management, said in a presentation at the 2018 IADC HSE&T Conference in Houston. Technology, including tablet-based DROPS systems, eLearning training and drones, can help the industry to further reduce DROPS incidents. In a survey conducted by EY in 2016, a whopping 94% of respondents said they believe that diversity of thought and experience are key to navigating disruptions in the oil and gas sector. Expandable liners enhanced for more precise, reliable refracs

Enventure has launched its enhanced versions of its ESeal RF and ESeal RFHT refrac expandable liners at the 2018 SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference and Exhibition, held 23-25 January in The Woodlands, Texas. The Enhanced ESeal RF and ESeal RFHT provide 16% and 45% higher strength, respectively, than the original ESeal RF Liner. This has expanded the operating envelope for installations using higher treatment pressures and in higher temperature reservoirs, which could exceed 300°F. The liners now offer more predictable zonal isolation and better ID preservation, said Matt Meiners, Technology and Product Development Manager at Enventure. Coiled-tubing frac sleeve with collet locating system improve BHA placement in extended-reach laterals

Coiled-tubing frac sleeve systems are gaining popularity due to their ability to deliver stimulation treatments to a large number of stages in extended-reach laterals. However, many of these systems rely on depth correlation for bottomhole assembly (BHA) placement, which can be imprecise. As a result, these systems often cannot accurately locate sleeves once they’re installed downhole. In response to this challenge, Baker Hughes, a GE company, developed the Blitz coiled-tubing frac sleeve system, which was launched at the 2018 SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference in The Woodlands, Texas. Self-drilling modules aim to help operators scale up operations, deliver consistency

To eliminate human error and reduce inefficiencies in drilling operations, AI Driller, an automation company that provides self-drilling applications, is gearing up to deliver a series of drilling modules, beginning with an ROP Module and Auto-Slider. The ROP Module, which is certified on National Oilwell Varco’s NOVOS platform, calculates the target weight on bit based on historical drilling data. The Auto-Slider, which is under field testing, applies autonomous directional drilling control for sliding with a conventional drilling motor based on inputs such as distance, inclination and release torque.
