Digitalization, data enable efficient vessel surveys, reduce out-of-service time

Digitalization and big data hold significant potential to improving asset integrity and reliability, David McKay, Chief Surveyor Offshore for DNV GL, said at the 2017 IADC Asset Integrity and Reliability Conference in Houston on 22 August. In this video with DC, Mr McKay discusses how data-driven innovations can...

JIP adapts technologies from other industries to enable remote inspection of confined spaces

Inspections of confined spaces and underwater inspections, such as hull inspections, that require the use of divers, expose people to HSE risks. The Hull Inspection Techniques and Strategy (HITS) Joint Industry Project has been adapting technologies from other industries, including the nuclear and gas pipeline industries, to allow these inspections to be performed remotely. Danny Constantinis, CEO of EM&I, an inspection and asset integrity organization, outlined some of the projects HITS has undertaken. In this video from the 2017 IADC Asset Integrity and Reliability Conference in Houston on 23 August, Mr Constantinis shares some of the safety and cost improvements the JIP’s projects have yielded. He also discusses alternatives the industry could consider to conventional methods for inspecting pressure systems...

Tubular handling system reduces pipe handling by 50%

Every time a worker has to handle tubulars, from the pipe yard to the drilling rig, there is risk for incident or injury. Global Gravity created the TubeLock system to reduce the handling required by halving the number of times a pipe is handled compared with wire bundling systems, Kim Christensen, Director of Sales and Marketing for Global Gravity, said during an IADC Spark Tank event on 2 August...

Drilling outlook: Offshore to remain weaker than onshore in near future

This year has so far been better than 206, but the industry still has a long way to go on its path to recovery. Speaking at the 2017 IADC World Drilling Conference on 28 June in Amsterdam, Matt Adams, Senior Analyst with Douglas-Westwood, highlighted the current attractiveness of onshore projects compared with offshore, including the lower risks and quicker returns...

Challenges, limitations must be understood before industry can fully leverage data mining

Data mining is defined as the computing process of discovering patterns in large data sets involving methods at the intersection of machine learning, statistics and database systems. How to best leverage data mining is something that the drilling industry is still trying to determine. In this video from the 2017 IADC World Drilling Conference on 29 June in Amsterdam, Christian Herbig, Project Engineer at the Baker Hughes Celle Technology Center in Germany, discusses the main challenges to leveraging big data in drilling, as well as benefits/limitations of data mining...

Wired drill pipe enables automation, optimization of drilling process

Maersk Drilling and National Oilwell Varco (NOV) recently collaborated on a project in the Norwegian North Sea in which wired drill pipe technology was installed and deployed on a jackup to improve the drilling process. The details of this project were discussed in a presentation at the 2017 IADC World Drilling Conference on 28 June in Amsterdam. The presentation was jointly delivered by Sarah Balangalibun, Senior Mechanical Engineer for Maersk Drilling, and Sanna Zainoune, Senior Dynamic Drilling Solutions Engineer with NOV. In this video with DC, Ms Balangalibun and Ms Zainoune talk about the challenges on this Norwegian field that led to the implementation of wired drill pipe technology, specific applications that were deployed the rig, as well as results achieved. Watch the video to learn more...

Companies should leverage data to make people, not machines, smarter

When talking about big data, the focus is often on using it to improve machine or software capabilities. However, the goal of big data should actually be to enable better human decision-making, Amit Mehta, Chief Excellence Officer for data analytics company Moblize, said at the IADC Drilling Engineers Committee Technology Forum, held on 14 June in Houston. In this video with DC, Mr Mehta explains how engineers can use big data to improve their performance and separate fact from fiction...

Proposed JIP to develop new software concept for RhoVe method

During the IADC Drilling Engineers Committee Technology Forum on 14 June in Houston, Matt Czerniak, Director of GCS Solutions, proposed a new JIP to establish a software concept for the RhoVe method. In this video from the forum, Mr Czerniak explains the RhoVe method, a pore pressure analysis approach that produces a model-driven, stand-alone set of virtual rock relationships. He also explains the goals of the JIP, as well as how the industry can get involved...
