Windhorst, Bratthammar receive IADC Exemplary Service Awards

 Two longtime IADC supporters received IADC Exemplary Service Awards at the 2009 Drilling HSE Europe Conference & Exhibition in Amsterdam on 23 September.

Gert-Jan Windhorst, Noble Drilling (Netherlands) BV, and Harald Bratthammar, Seadrill, were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the industry, with special emphasis on advancing HSE and training.

Mr Windhorst, Noble manager-HSE&Q Europe, initiated the IADC Northwest European HSE Case development project, and Mr Bratthammar, Seadrill QA director, participated in the effort.

The IRF award-winning HSE Case Guidelines have gained broad regulatory acceptance, from Europe to the Caribbean to Australia and other regions.

Both men have long served on the IADC European Operations Forum and were co-developers of the IADC Offshore Competency Training Programme. Messrs Bratthammar and Windhorst serve on the IADC Environmental Policy Advisory Panel. They are also continuing and longtime members of the programme committee for IADC Drilling HSE Europe conference

 Mr Windhorst began his career in merchant shipping, earning a Master’s assignment in the offshore and dredging industries. He also participated in the Dutch oil-pollution removal team. He obtained a Ship’s Master’s certificate without restrictions.

After earning a BSc in safety and working in that discipline for several years in other industries, Mr Windhorst joined the HSEQ department of Neddrill, a legacy Noble company. In 1998, he was appointed HSEQ manager for Europe. During this time, Mr Windhorst worked on Noble’s Super EVA design, a novel concept for a new generation of semisubmersibles. The EVAs were the first rigs certified under the ISO 14001 environmental standard.

 

 Mr Bratthammar is a 1981 graduate of Rogaland Regional University in Stavanger, Norway, where he earned a degree in petroleum technology. That year, he joined the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate’s Drilling Section, now the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway, as a drilling engineer. As such, he evaluated drilling work programmes, audits and verifications, as well as development of new regulations.

In 1986, Mr Bratthammar joined Polar Frontier Drilling AS as safety and QA manager, and in 1988, he moved to Conoco Norway Inc. At Conoco, Mr Bratthammar was a regulatory supervisor for the Heidrun Project.

He joined Smedvig Offshore AS in 1996 as QA manager and was named manager of the Q&HSE department in 1998. With the March 2006 acquisition of Smedvig by Seadrill, Mr Bratthammar became part of corporate management, serving as vice president-Q&HSE. The position was recently split, and Mr Bratthammar obtained his current title.
