IADC launches KSA Competencies online database

IADC officially kicked off its Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Competencies Program last week at IADC World Drilling 2014 in Vienna. The goal of the project is to ensure the competency of rig crews, supporting the drilling industry's path to zero incidents, Jay Minmier, 2014 IADC Chairman and President of Nomac Drilling, said in launching the program.

Lacy: Industry must address human factors as part of self-regulation

Tracing the cause of major incidents in the drilling industry often leads to single-point human errors. Participating on a panel discussion titled "Are we doing enough as an industry to be self-regulated?" at IADC World Drilling 2014 in Vienna on 19 June, industry veteran Kevin Lacy highlighted the role that human factors play in process safety. In this exclusive interview with DC Associate Editor Joanne Liou, Mr Lacy shares his insights on how industry can make processes more effective and steps to improve self-regulation.

OMV: Technology key to halving cost, doubling the number of wells drilled

From operations onshore Romania to offshore New Zealand, challenges come in all shapes and sizes for OMV E&P, but the Austrian-based operator is showing no sign of slowing down. "The reality is we're going to halve the cost and double the number of wells drilled," Jaap Huijskes, member of the Executive Board and Managing Director of OMV, stated. "I'm not looking for 5%. I'm not looking for 10%. If we can halve the cost of the wells, we will double the number of wells that we drill."

IHS: Rising operating costs challenge outlook for offshore rig market

The strength of offshore rig dayrates in recent years has attracted significant investment and a spate of orders for newbuilds – particularly for premium jackups, Tom Kellock, Senior Manager – Consulting at IHS, explained at IADC World Drilling 2014 in Vienna on 18 June. At the same time, operators, drilling contractors and analysts alike are concerned about rising operating costs, of which personnel accounts for more than 50%. Watch this exclusive video with Mr Kellock to learn about his outlook for the global offshore rig market.

Chevron DSM Foundations program streamlines training process

Companies across the industry are challenged to meet requirements for qualified personnel. To address this issue, Chevron implemented the Drill Site Manager (DSM) Foundations program approximately two years ago and has since produced more than 100 employees in this discipline. Jim Barron, Manager of the Clear Leader Center for Chevron, presented an overview of the program at IADC World Drilling 2014 on 18 June in Vienna. In this exclusive video, Mr Barron speaks with DC Associate Editor Joanne Liou about the program and the critical role of mentors.

Collaboration among operator, contractor, service company provides MPD functionality to drillship

As operators face increasingly challenging reservoirs, conventional technologies are oftentimes becoming inefficient in safely achieving well objectives on time and on budget. To address wellbore issues in ultra-deepwater projects offshore West Africa, Weatherford worked with Repsol and Rowan Companies to provide MPD functionality to a drillship. In this exclusive video from the exhibit floor of IADC World Drilling 2014 in Vienna, Guy Feasey, Global Director of Sales and Marketing for Secure Drilling Services at Weatherford, talks about the challenges the team faced in logistics and installation operations.

'Seamless' approach needed to drive performance in unconventional field development

While advanced technologies have allowed the industry to drill farther and complete more stimulation stages in each wellbore, there is still room for improvement. Rustom Mody, Vice President of Technology at Baker Hughes, spoke on a panel discussion titled "Unconventional Resources, Unconventional Solutions" at IADC World Drilling 2014 in Vienna on 18 June. Watch the video to learn how Baker Hughes is applying a "seamless" approach to drilling and completing unconventionals to drive quality, reliability and efficiency across the life of the asset.

Mapping the future to 2025: Drilling system automatically executes well plan, completion

A group of multidisciplinary experts from inside and outside the drilling industry has banded together to develop a roadmap for drilling systems automation (DSA). The DSA Roadmap Cross Industry Initiative recognizes the need for DSA and the direction – a roadmap – to reach the destination. "You can't develop it step by step. You need a roadmap to get from here to where our future is going to be," John de Wardt, DE WARDT AND COMPANY, stated at the 2014 IADC DSA Roadmap Workshop on 17 June in Vienna. During the workshop, Mr de Wardt shared the group's ongoing work, and attendees discussed various automation challenges and provided feedback.

Lessons from chemical industry: 3 keys to process automation

The integration of process and automation engineering in the chemical industry has led to increases in overall efficiency and shorter project times, Thomas Dieckhoff of Siemens explained at the 2014 IADC Drilling Systems Automation Roadmap Workshop on 17 June in Vienna. In this exclusive interview with DC, Mr Dieckhoff describes the three core concepts of process automation – integrated engineering, production excellence and modularization/decentralization/standardization – and challenges to apply automation in the drilling business.

Instrumentation, measurement and sensor integration challenge drilling systems automation

One of eight defined challenges of drilling systems automation is IMS – instrumentation, measurement and sensors. John Macpherson of Baker Hughes is leading the challenge group that is addressing the integration of IMS into the drilling system to deliver reliable and accurate data in a timely fashion. At the 2014 IADC Drilling Systems Automation Roadmap Workshop last week in Vienna, Mr Macpherson spoke with Drilling Contractor associate editor Joanne Liou about the group's efforts and issues around ownership of surface sensors.

CSB report: Macondo BOP failed due to unrecognized pipe buckling during well control efforts

The blowout preventer (BOP) that was intended to shut off the flow of high-pressure oil and gas from the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico failed to seal the well because drill pipe buckled for reasons the offshore drilling industry remains largely unaware of, according to a report released earlier this month by the US Chemical Safety Board (CSB). The CSB report concluded that the pipe buckling likely occurred during the first minutes of the blowout. Although other investigations had previously noted that drill pipe in the wellbore was found in a bent or buckled state, this was assumed to have occurred days later, after the blowout was well under way.

Maersk Drilling orders 20K BOP, risers for BP project

Maersk Drilling has ordered four BOPs and two risers from GE Oil and Gas that will be used in the Project 20K partnership with BP. The BOPs and risers will be delivered and deployed on two Maersk Drilling 20K drilling rigs by year-end 2018. The order includes the option for the delivery of additional BOPs and will be subject to BP and Maersk Drilling's final investment decision on a 20K drilling rig contract.

Derricks & Diamonds raises over $350,000 for cancer research, support

The 2014 Derricks & Diamonds charity softball tournament and gala raised more than $350,000, passing the $2 million mark in total funds donated over the past decade for pediatric oncology research and improving the lives and care of children battling cancer. The event, launched in 2004 by National Oilwell Varco and Schlumberger, contributes 100% of monetary contributions to Texas Children's Hospital (TCH). Proceeds from a raffle and winning auction bids go to the Snowdrop Foundation, which assists patients and their families at the TCH Cancer Center through funding for continued research to eliminate childhood cancer and scholarships for college-bound pediatric cancer patients and survivors.
